Q1. Name, location?

A1. Kajal Anand – Located in Mumbai - Maharashtra.
National Vice President of CAIT and Co-Founder of Debon Herbal, a cosmetic manufacturing business and Vice Chairperson - All India Manufacturers’ Organization (AIMO).

Q2. Name of business, type of business, date of founding?

A2. Own a cosmetic manufacturing unit called Debon Herbal Pvt ltd. This company was incorporated in 1995.

Q3. Future business plans

A3. My son has recently joined our business and is going to lead the marketing function. With his expertise, we hope to expand into manufacturing a new range of products and franchise our business since we have a good variety of herbal products available. Though we currently do export, we want to focus more on exploring new markets and hence want to increase are exporting capacity and volume.

Q4. How many of your family (if relevant) work in the business and who are they?

A4. This venture was started by my husband, Mr. Shyam Anand and myself – we are the only two directors of the company. My son Rishi Anand is the newest family member to join our business.

Q5. How hard has it been to access finance?

A5. Initially it was very difficult to access finance. We were unaware of the documentation required and how to arrange for this since we were just a start-up and barely had any transactional history. We slowly learnt the importance of having a good personal credit history and how helpful that can be to get loans at the inception of your business. As the business grew, we earned a lot of goodwill in the market because of the high quality of our products. We also managed to get all our documents in place eventually it became easier for us to get loans.

Q6. How digital are the operations of your business on a scale of 0-10 if 0 = completely analogue and 10 = completely digital?

A6. Currently between 5-6. Most of our inhouse operations are run through digital platforms. Right from our accounts, payroll, inventory management– all are digitised functions. The place where we want to further digitise is through our new website which is a work in progress as well as to increase our presence on online distribution channels/ market places.

Q7. Where do you think you will be on a scale of 0-10 in three years time?

A7. Preferably want to be a lot more digitised with an e-commerce website. We already have presence online on different market places like Amazon, Purple and Nykaa. We want to further increase our online presence in other cities across India. Having said this, we still want to have some offline presence, especially in Mumbai where our shop is located. I would therefore be giving a rating of 8/10.

Q8. What innovation have you introduced in order to overcome issues around financing?

A8. I have been very active within the CAIT community at a national and association level – I’ve been the key person of many associations and that has helped me do a lot of networking. It’s at these associations where we invite business advisors who educate us on business topics. We view CreditEnable is an important partner given their solutions to create avenues for CAIT members to avail finance.

Q9. Any other information that you would like to share?

A9. We are very keen to expand further and explore other avenues within the cosmetic and nutraceutical market. We hope to do this in the form of Joint Ventures – we want to enter a chain of bigger retail shops and do a revenue share with the owners of the same. Similarly, we want to reposition ourselves as a more premium brand and market ourselves accordingly. We hope to create this “premium brand” through an umbrella company. We also hope to be a one stop shop for everything cosmetic related including procurement and growth of raw/herbal materials to the actual packaging of the product.
